LE PANIC ÉRIGÉ : L'ALTERNATIVE
SWITCHGRASS : THE ALTERNATIVE
THE SWITCHGRASS
Our company is looking for producers of switchgrass in order to start material production.
Sales regions are the provinces of Canada, including Ontario and Quebec.
Switchgrass can be planted with a conventional drill seeder, mowed and baled, as well as large round square. Do not forget that it will take two years to get a full harvest, which will average 4 to 6 metric tons per acre. The crop is cut into windrows in the fall and left in the fields until spring for baling. This will allow the stems to dry, thereby reducing the content and level of Chlorine Phorphore for better combustion.
Strong and adaptable perennial, switchgrass can reach 7-10 feet high, with stems both thin and strong. The roots are gaining depth in the soil and use water efficiently. The Panic is extremely tolerant to drought and excess water. With a minimum of herbicide and fertilizer required, the panic is a crop with low production cost.
Switchgrass is an excellent ally in the conservation of soil and the control of erosion. Switchgrass is an ideal crop for farm practices.

WEEDS
PRACTICES IN CONVENTIONAL AND NO-TILL:
• Make a prescribed using a glyphosate-based herbicide before any tillage whatsoever.
• Apply 1 lb. active atrazine at 1 "-2" of the course of growth for a control of most weeds.
• Use MCPAA 500 or MCPA Estaprop Plus@0.7L / acre or Buctril M@0.4L / acre or 2-4.D Amine 500 @ 0.5 L/acre for broadleaf.
- We did some trials with other pesticides mix usable in the switchgrass crop with Prowl @ 0.9 L/acre + 0.085 L/acre of Pursuit.. The results are very excellent.
ORGANIC PRODUCTION PRACTISES:
• Work the fields selected and appointed to switchgrass in the previous autumn planting and sowing rye following. let the rye growing until the early stage of flowering. At this stage, we can either cut it or the work by rolling to flatten the ground. After that, we can plant switchgrass by mid-June.
• Escape routes of weeds can be controlled by mowing a specific time of weeds at a height of 2 to 3 inches above the growth point of panic.
Do not mow <CAUTION> switchgrass in the year of its establishment.
CROP
Year of Establishment:
Levels of soil fertility must be established according to a recent soil test of the latter.
Fields with low levels of P and K are preferred.
The variety 'Cave in Rock "is a variety very suitable for our region and has very good winter hardiness.
This variety Requires 12 oC temperature of soil to start growing and slow to establish.
Seeding will be done in mid-May to 1 July in warm soils.
The soil should be rolled up and pack before and after sowing.
The seeding rate is 13,5 lb per acre.
The planting depth should be one-quarter to three eighths of an inch, in a bed of semnce firm, for better contact surface-to-seed switchgrass.
Seeding can be done in a conventional drills, no-till or broadcast. Brillion-type seedlings are preferred.
In general, grasses will tolerate low pH levels (5.5) with moderate levels of phosphorus and potash.
No nitrogen should be added at planting because it would promote the growth of weeds that would compete with Panic.
Weeds should be controlled pre-emergence, with both burning with a herbicide with a tillage. (See module on control of weeds on this page)
The control of weeds can be accomplished using the recommendations of OMAFRA. Contact us for more details.
The cut should be between 1 to 2 inches above the point of growth of switchgrass at least twice in the year of the establishment for control of weeds, within 4 to 6 weeks after planting and again before weeds have sufficient growth and before they produce seed.
Switchgrass should not be mowed in the year of its establishment.
Year 2:
FIRST YEAR OF PRODUCTION
40 lbs. / acre of nitrogen should be applied in July.
A cut above the growing point early in the season may be provided for better control of weeds.
The first real cut or harvest will be made later in the fall after full dormancy has been reached, leaving a minimum of 4 inches of stubble.
Year 3 and beyond:
Baling previous years in April or May has served to condition the culture and soil.
Apply 50-60 lbs. / Acre of nitrogen active when switchgrass was 4 inches tall (early July).
Cut the culture later in the fall after the switchgrass is dormant, leaving at least 4 inches of stubble.
This information is a landmark for all producers, but more information will be provided depending on your specific case and your farm.
